i’m scared
my stepmother gets mad easy
i’ll get the belt if i get up
i wish i had a nightlight
i see the man again
he’s standing by the door

he moves so slow
but he’s coming for me
he got my brother
i miss johnny
daddy took me to work with him
when johnny wouldn’t wake up
everybody said hi to me
they asked where johnny was
daddy said he’s gone
but wouldn’t say where
i cried hard
daddy left me in the boiler room
where he works
said he would be right back
he was gone a long time
it was hot
a lady came and asked what i was doing there
i told her my daddy told me he would be right back
i don’t think she likes my daddy
after a long time
my daddy came back
he told me i had to stay at some peoples house
they had a boy for me to play with
i miss johnny
i know the man in the bedroom got him
i played with the boy
i told him i missed johnny
he sprayed me in my eyes with something that smells like a car motor
it stings, i can’t see
this time i cry for me
a lady puts milk in my eyes
i can see with my eyes again
it still hurts
i have to sleep at the boy’s house
daddy took me home the next day
johnny doesn’t live here anymore
i miss johnny
i have to sleep in that room again
i’m scared
i think about when i was mean to johnny
i cry more
i dream johnny is in a house
a mean lady won’t let me in
if i get johnny out he can live with me again
the mean lady won’t let me in
i wake up crying
nobody talks about johnny
my stepmother’s kids come to our house
they are lots older than me
they have lots of kids
they all stay and eat
some of the boys sleep in my room
the man was there
but stayed by the door
everybody wakes up and eats and plays all day
then they go home
i miss johnny
i’m scared of the man
i miss my johnny
i go to school
stepmother gives me johnny’s obituary
to show the teacher
instead of a note
